2011 marks the 50th anniversary of a favorite North Dakota college football traveling trophy: the Paint Bucket.
The rivalry between Jamestown College and Valley City State University continues Saturday. Game time is 1 p.m. at VCSU.
Valley City State holds a slight edge in overall Paint Bucket wins (29-28), but Jamestown College has won the last five games dating back to 2007. (Two games were played in 2008). The Jimmies and Vikings will play a second time this year on Oct. 22 at Jamestown College.
From the Jamestown College Athletic Department archives:
In the light of the unsportsmanlike rivalry existing between the Jamestown College student body and the Valley City State Teachers College student body preceding the ANNUAL FOOTBALL CONTEST in the fall, the respective student associations met in January of 1961 and established a program intended to direct this rivalry to more sportsmanlike and less destructive activities.
A trophy, symbolic of the rivalry of past years, shall be presented to the team emerging victorious in the annual football game. This trophy shall have the year and that school’s name engraved on the base and remain in the possession of that school until the following year and game when it, as in years to follow, will again be presented to the school emerging victorious.
Let it therefore be known that, on the twenty-eighth day of October in the nineteen hundred and sixty-first year of our Lord, that, with the football game between Valley City State Teachers College and Jamestown College, the heretofore described Paint Bucket Series shall commence.
**In 2008, an addendum to the Paint Bucket Series was made in respect to the previous non-conference games that have been played between the two schools. It was suggested that the trophy was awarded to the winner in every previous football contest. The fact of the non-conference games played between the two rival teams prior to 2008 suggests that 1990 (VCSU 34 JC 20), 1991 (JC 20 VCSU 19), 1992 (JC 19 VCSU 18), 1993 (JC 28 VCSU 21), 1994 (JC 40 VCSU 25), 1996 (VCSU20 JC 14); should also be listed on the trophy. The overall Paint Bucket Trophy series record should hereby be amended to include these games as well as the two games in 2008 (JC 24 VCSU 21).
